GREATER MILWAUKEE ASSOCIATION OF LEGAL PROFESSIONALS
The Greater Milwaukee Association of Legal Professionals ("GMALP") was formed in 1958. GMALP is an educational, nonprofit association. Its purpose is to carry on programs for the further education of those engaged in work of a legal nature; to elevate and maintain standards of learning in the legal profession; to stimulate a high order of business and professional attainment; to further the knowledge of the law and uphold its honor and dignity; to cooperate with attorneys, judges and bar associations; and to establish good fellowship among its members.
THE HISTORY OF NALS
In 1929, Eula Mae Jett was approached by her employer to develop a way for legal secretaries to get together to discuss their jobs and discover ways to do them better and more efficiently. Along with several of her colleagues, Jett established a group that met and discussed topics affecting their careers. The focus of these meetings shifted to education, and the popularity grew. These meetings continues, and the word of their success spread. By 1949, groups throughout the country had developed and the National Associations of Legal Secretaries (NALS) was formed. NALS began to hold meetings, not only on the local level, but expanded to include state, regional, and even national meetings focusing on the legal services industry.
Diversity of membership reflected a changing legal services industry. The information needed by legal secretaries was changing along with their job descriptions. As these changes took place and the profession evolved, so did NALS. To better reflect the nature and membership of NALS, it was determined that NALS would no longer be used as an acronym but rather as a name along with the tag line "...the association for legal professionals" in 1999.
Today NALS remains a leader in the legal services industry offering professional development by providing continuing legal education, certification(s), information and training to those choosing the legal services industry as their career. NALS members represent every area of this industry from paralegals and legal assistants to legal administrators and office managers. Because of the diversity and an openness to welcome all members of the legal community, NALS offers a broad spectrum of expertise to make the programs offered valuable to all members. This allows NALS members to learn about other areas of the industry, making career enhancement as well as advancement easily attainable.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
August 2010
 In August, our speaker will be Bev Butula of Davis & Kuelthau. Bev is a very entertaining and informative speaker. She will be speaking to us this time on "Open Source and Other Web 2.0 Tools." In September, we will be having a members only event at Miller Park. Thanks to Mary Burns for making these wonderful arrangements for us! On October 2, GMALP will sponsor the WALP Fall Board Meeting. Sheri Hare has been hard at work making arrangements for our meeting site (Potawotami), hotel (Crowne Plaza in Wauwatosa) and speakers. The WALP Fall Seminar will be held on October 1. Juli Durie, WALP President-Elect, will send out information with speaker information, etc. Both days will be full of fun and education! If you would like to donate a door prize, please contact Sheri Hare or Tami Michalak. This issue of the Preview contains information concerning the Unsung Heroes Award. We have been a proud sponsor, along with the Wisconsin Law Journal, of this award for many years. Please consider nominating a chapter member or co-worker worthy of this prestigious award. Last year, our chapter was honored to have two nominees! Melody Kniess has plans well underway for our Day in Circuit Court. It will be held October 11. The Jett Awards are named after NALS founder, Eula Mae Jett and they represent the "best of the best" programs in NALS.
Through the efforts of our dedicated members, GMALP was the proud recipient of a Keystone Award, which recognizes excellence in chapter and state programs, in both 2002-03, 2003-04 and again at the NALS Professional Development Conference in March 2006 for our joint participation with AWL in the Womenade event held at Helfauer Field in August of 2005.
